In the first year, the formation of a basal rosette of leaves occurs, in the second, upright stems and alternate, wide-ovoid, whole-marginal, and below grayish-felt petiole leaves. The flowers of burdock are purple-violet, tubular, bisexual, in spherical baskets (30-40 mm in diameter). Pestle with a lower single-ovary ovary, a threadlike column and 2 stigmas (linear). Fruits in the form of brown achenes with a flying of short bristles. Burdock blooms in July - August, the fruits ripen in August - September.
Widely distributed in the temperate climate of the Old World, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, and from the British Isles through Russia and the Middle East to China and Japan, including India. It is brought to North and South America. In our country, it grows almost everywhere near housing, along wastelands, along roads, as well as in forests on clearings and among shrubs throughout the steppe and forest-steppe zone of the European part of Russia, in the Urals, partly in Siberia, the Caucasus and the Far East. It often grows in garbage, abandoned and disturbed areas rich in nitrogen.
Medicinal raw materials are juicy and fleshy roots of burdock of the first year of life, they are dug up in September - October. The roots are washed with water, then they are separated from the aboveground part and cut lengthwise into pieces of 10-15 cm. The roots are dried in the open air or in well-ventilated rooms, and, if necessary, they are dried in drying chambers at a temperature of 45-50 ° C. Burdock leaves are harvested in July - August, drying is carried out in air in the shade, or in well-ventilated areas. Seeds are harvested as they ripen.
In the roots of burdock, the inulin content reaches 45%, essential bardane oil up to 0.17%; also contains palmitic, stearic acid, sitosterol and stigmasterol, tannins, bitter and fat-like substances, mineral salts, organic acids (coffee, malic, citric), a lot of protein (up to 12%), sugar, B vitamins, a significant amount of ascorbic acid. Arctin glycoside and fatty oil (up to 20%) were noted in the seeds; in the leaves - essential oil, mucus, tannins, ascorbic acid, carotene.
